- Apple announces support for General Magic technologies
-
- NEW YORK--February 8, 1993--Following the unveiling by General Magic
- of their Telescript and Magic Cap technologies, Apple has announced
- its intention to include Telescript with its Macintosh PowerBook
- family as well as with products from its Personal Interactive
- Electronics (PIE) division. These include products in the
- forthcoming Newton family and services from the Apple Online Services
- Group.
- "Apple is uniquely positioned to integrate hardware, software and
- services and to drive technology standards - Telescript will allow us
- to enhance our current offerings in these areas, as well as create
- new classes of products and services. " according to Gaston
- Bastiaens, vice president and general manager of Apple's Personal
- Interactive Electronics (PIE) division.
- "Apple was involved in the genesis of General Magic," said Apple
- chairman and chief executive officer John Sculley. "We're very
- excited about the company's technology and the impact of the alliance
- announced today."
- Telescript is General Magic's programming language and software for
- communications. It embeds intelligence in electronic mail systems
- and computer applications, enabling them to co-operate with one
- another and with the networks that interconnect them.
- General Magic grew out of a project at Apple Computer designed to
- look beyond personal computing. Two of its three founders - Andy
- Hertzfeld and Bill Atkinson - were principal members of the original
- Macintosh development team. Third co-founder and General Magic
- president, Marc Porat, came from Apple's Advanced Technology Group.
