  13. Apple announces support for General Magic technologies

  15. NEW YORK--February 8, 1993--Following the unveiling by General Magic
  16. of their Telescript and Magic Cap technologies, Apple has announced
  17. its intention to include Telescript with its Macintosh PowerBook
  18. family as well as with products from its Personal Interactive
  19. Electronics (PIE) division.  These include products in the
  20. forthcoming Newton family and services from the Apple Online Services
  21. Group.
  22.     "Apple is uniquely positioned to integrate hardware, software and
  23. services and to drive technology standards - Telescript will allow us
  24. to enhance our current offerings in these areas, as well as create
  25. new classes of products and services. " according to Gaston
  26. Bastiaens, vice president and general manager of Apple's Personal
  27. Interactive Electronics (PIE) division.
  28.     "Apple was involved in the genesis of General Magic," said Apple
  29. chairman and chief executive officer John Sculley.  "We're very
  30. excited about the company's technology and the impact of the alliance
  31. announced today."
  32.     Telescript is General Magic's programming language and software for
  33. communications.  It embeds intelligence in electronic mail systems
  34. and computer applications, enabling them to co-operate with one
  35. another and with the networks that interconnect them.
  36.     General Magic grew out of a project at Apple Computer designed to
  37. look beyond personal computing.  Two of its three founders - Andy
  38. Hertzfeld and Bill Atkinson - were principal members of the original
  39. Macintosh development team.  Third co-founder and General Magic
  40. president, Marc Porat, came from Apple's Advanced Technology Group.
